Northern Gas are proposing to carry out hydrogen trials on the Housing Market Renewal Site (HMRS) at South Bank which comprises of a section of Harcourt Road, Cromwell Road, Pym Street and Scarborough Street (seen in the image below)<\/strong> all close to Skippers Lane Industrial Estate.<\/p>\n

A public consultation drop-in event for both local residents and businesses to gain a further understanding of the project and its potential benefits, as well an opportunity to voice concerns has been arranged.<\/p>\n

H21 is a suite of pioneering gas industry projects led by Northern Gas, focused on demonstrating that the existing UK gas grid can be repurposed to carry 100% hydrogen, to meet the 2050 objectives of the UK reaching Net Zero emissions. Heat contributes toward a third of our annual CO2 emissions. How we decarbonise this key contributor when 83% of domestic homes currently use natural gas for heating and cooking remains unclear. Through a series of projects, the H21 programme is delivering evidence in support of a transition to a 100% hydrogen future.<\/p>\n

On the 22nd January 2020 a meeting, hosted by the Tees Valley Combined Authority, took place with Northern Gas at which they explained the circa \u00a310m of safety research and trials currently being undertaken.<\/p>\n

Northern Gas are now in the process of planning the field trials stage and have been investigating a number of sites across the UK, one of which is the Housing Market Renewal Site (HMRS) at South Bank which comprises of a section of Harcourt Road, Cromwell Road, Pym Street and Scarborough Street (seen in the image above).<\/strong> The proposed site is owned by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council. The roads remain adopted and because this is a HMRS the gas mains, together with all other utilities are still live. Consequently, the site offers the ideal ingredients for field trials to take place.

The NG proposed works would not be detrimental to the Skippers Lane Industrial Estate Extension project.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n
