SUMMARY:VE Day 80th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Redcar Branch Royal British Legion invites you to a full day of remembrance\, community spirit and celebrating peace as we commemorate Victory in Europe Day on Thursday 8th May with a jam-packed events programme! \n\n9am – Raising of VE Day flags at Redcar Civic Centre\, Redcar Garden of Remembrance and Coatham Social Club.\n11.30am – Parade of standard bearers and veterans’ associations and anyone who wishes to join. March from Boating Lake to Redcar Beacon.\n12pm – VE 80 Redcar Celebrations at The Beacon. Memorial service followed by readings\, poetry\, music from the Redcar Community Choir and singing of the national anthem. Stalls from the Royal British Legion and RNLI and ‘80 tombola’ with prizes.\n6.30pm – Together We Chime – Let the Nation’s Bells Ring Loud. Church bells ring out across the borough.\n8pm – Light Ceremony at Coatham Boating Lake.\n8.15pm – Boating Lake bridge lit up and decorated with 2 x 6ft ‘Tommies’\, poppy drape\, spotlights and smoke machine. Please feel free to bring a lamp\, torch\, candle or similar. (NB: lake will be dry for this event).\n8.30pm – Entertainment by George Robinson – Redcar’s crooner.\n9pm – Entertainment from the Redcar Community Choir\n9.30pm  -Beacons at Birk Brow and Danby will be lit.\n9.30pm – Everyone invited to join in with the national singing of I Vow to Thee my Country\, followed by Give me Oil in my Lamp and the national anthem. A ‘peace lamp’ will be lit with the flame representing the ‘light of peace’ emerging from the darkness of war. Lighting up over 200 candle tealights\, each one with the name of one of the WW2 casualties listed on the Redcar cenotaph and also the 15 civilians sadly killed when the Zetland Club\, Redcar\, was bombed in October 1941 and the civilians lost when the Redcar Iron & Steel Works at Warrenby were bombed in November 1941 and January 1942.

DESCRIPTION:D-Day was the successful allied invasion of the beaches of Normandy on 6 June 1944. The Normandy landings made up the largest seaborne invasion in history and played a crucial role in liberating Western Europe from Nazi occupation. \nWe would be delighted if you could come along to commemorate D-DAY 80th Anniversary (Operation OVERLOAD).\nThe British Legion and veterans will be reconstructing the D-Day landing (smaller scale) on Redcar beach. There will be fishing boats and military vehicles creating a war scene with flares and pyrotechnics.\nA parade will set off at 10.30am from Redcar Beach. The Parade will be led by the Standard Bearers\, Veterans and any-one else who wishes to take part on the day.\nThere will be stalls\, memorabilia\, military vehicles\, and goods for sale.\nAdults and Children are encouraged to dress up!

DESCRIPTION:A series of special activities will be held in Redcar and Cleveland to mark this year’s Armed Forces Day. \nTaking place on Saturday 24 June\, the day will officially open at 10.15am with a parade of military personnel\, both past and present\, on Redcar High Street. \nEntertainment has been organised throughout the day for people of all ages\, with music and singers\, cadet drill displays\, and children’s activities such as a climbing wall and mobile cave. \nWe are especially delighted to introduce Whizz Bangs/Sounds of the Battlefield this year who are a North East based re-enactment group covering British and American World War 2 era. There will be numerous static displays of weapons and military vehicles. A firing demonstration and informative talk of various infantry weapons. Pistols\, rifles\, machine guns and mortars etc. The display lasts approximately 30 minutes. There will be very loud bangs\, firing and smoke. \nThe iconic Lancaster Bomber will be seen in the skies for a fly past during the afternoon\, and military memorabilia will be on display. Refreshments will be on offer\, and local charities and groups will have stalls along the High Street. The event\, which concludes at 3.30pm\, is organised by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council\, in partnership with Royal British Legion Redcar Branch and Rotary Club \nEvent Programme: \n10.15am – Official Opening: Parade on Redcar High Street from Moore Street to near the Town Clock. Introduction and welcome by Mr Eric Howden BEM\, Chairman of Redcar Branch Royal British Legion. \n10.25am – Raising of the Colours: Cadets of TS Zetland \n10.35am – Welcome address by the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland. The Last Post is sounded. The Two Minute Silence is observed. Reveille is sounded. Three cheers for His Majesty The King Charles III followed by the National Anthem \n10.45am – Service of Thanksgiving\, opening prayer and blessing from Revd Rebecca Haughty from the Parish of Coatham and Dormanstown. \n11am – Parade: March Off the High Street \n11.05am – Locals Vocal Choir \n11.35am – Imaginarium Dance Theatre performing near Iceland \n12noon – Whizz Bangs Sounds of the Battlefield. A Live Firing display. Prepare for loud bangs and booms! \n12.35pm – Cadet Demonstrations and Standard Bearer Drill Competition between Sea Cadets from TS Zetland and 2394 Sqn Royal Air Force Cadets. \n1.05pm – The Lipsticks Vintage Trio \n2pm – Canny Yatton Ukes \n2.30pm – Result of the Drill and Best Dressed Window Competition \n2.40pm – Dance Off: Join the cadets on the dance floor. \n3pm – Marske Brass Band \n3.49pm – The Iconic Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will be seen in the skies on a Fly Past. \n3.50pm – Evening Colours at the Town Clock: A farewell and safe journey home. \nAll events will be held near the town clock unless otherwise stated.
