SUMMARY:Hazards\, Heroes\, & Superstitions Exhibit Launches at Skinningrove’s Land of Iron Museum
DESCRIPTION:A new temporary exhibition at Skinningrove’s Land of Iron launches this Saturday 1st July celebrating the unsung heroes of the ironstone mining era. \nEver wanted to find out why miners loved rats so much? Puzzled over who made munitions for the troops during the First World War? Wondered why it’s considered unlucky to put your shoes on the table? \nAnswers to these questions and many more can be found at the exhibition which can be seen as part of a visit to Land of Iron. Hazards\, Heroes & Superstitions gives visitors the opportunity to view rarely seen photographs and artefacts that are not normally on display to the public as part of the museum’s permanent exhibition. \nThe exhibit was curated by Land of Iron’s Collections Officer\, Angela List-Evans\, and is made up of pieces from the museum’s large archive collection. \nAngela said: \n‘We have put a lot of work into creating an exciting new exhibit for visitors to the museum that tells some of the lesser-known stories of the lives\, dangers\, and everyday heroics of the people and animals who clearly weren’t ironstone miners but lived and worked alongside them. \nAs well as artefacts\, photos and stories\, there are also ways for younger children to get involved by following our museum mascot Gladstone the Rat through the exhibit and discover things for themselves.’ \nLand of Iron\, formerly Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum\, reopened to the public in 2023 following a substantial redevelopment project. Thanks to National Lottery players\, and the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund\, £2.3 million was invested into the museum which is now set to bring expansion\, employment and tourism to Skinningrove’s Iron Valley. \nHazards\, Heroes\, & Superstitions opens on Saturday 1st July until Saturday 30th September. Admission is included within the museum’s standard entry fee.

The soughing of the sea? \nElectronic music pioneers A Man Called Adam (think literal originators of Balearic Beats!) are back in their native North-East and looking to create a new piece of music with young musicians in Teesside. \nSally & Steve are running two three-hour sessions at TunedIn in Redcar on Wednesday 9 & Thursday 10 August.   Learn the art of deep listening (google it!) and how to repurpose non-musical sound.  Day 1: Capture everyday sounds\, from bingo callers to birdlife\, from weather fronts to checkout chats – to create a rich and distinctive sound portrait of the town. \nDay 2:  Sally and Steve will create beats from the gathered sounds and discuss how Hip-Hop artists use their own\, idiosyncratic experiences to craft their lyrics and sonic worlds. We encourage you to explore in your own way! \nThere are five luminaria touring the world at any one time and since 1992 more than 3 million visitors in over 40 countries have been welcomed into Architects of Air’s monumental structures. DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to the next exhibition at The Heritage Gallery at Cargo Fleet: A Wild Ride by Garth Bayley. \nThe exhibition will be open with free admission\, Monday – Friday\, 8.30am – 4.45pm\, with an opening evening from 5pm – 7pm on Thursday 19th October. \nThe opening offers a great opportunity to meet Garth over drinks & nibbles and ask any questions about the work on display. \nGarth arrived in the United Kingdom 15 years ago with his suitcase and a taste for adventure. The change from leaving South Africa and his previous career as a chef to become an international selling artist has not been without challenge. \nGarth’s love for people\, colour and movement is the foundation of his practice. His work originated in the subject of dance and he is still inspired by this. He recently had the opportunity to observe and sketch Northern Ballet (based in Leeds) during rehearsals for an upcoming show. These sketches will soon lead to a new series of paintings. \nGarth has documented several cycling races for a number of years now and his “painting a day” approach to following races such as the Tour de France\, the Giro d’Italia and our own Tours of Britain and Yorkshire has led to comprehensive body of work that collectors have snapped up from across the world. \nA third form of movement expressed in his painting comes from animals\, most frequently horses and horseracing. Inspiration drawn from the everyday completes the repertoire and transforms more static items such as buildings and the world around us into landscapes that capture a moment in time with evocative colour and movement.
