SUMMARY:National Road Series Cycling - The East Cleveland Classic
DESCRIPTION:The Race\nRedcar and Cleveland Borough Council in partnership with British Cycling are launching a new elite level cycling event\, born out of last year’s successful National Championships. The East Cleveland Classic will take place on Sunday 14th April 2024. \nThe event will form part of British Cycling’s National Road Series for 2024 and will be the curtain raiser for the men’s series and second race in the Calander for the ladies. \nThe National Road Series is the premier road racing series in the UK for men and women. It is the only series of road races in the UK that features Britain’s top domestic Continental and elite-level teams\, including teams from British Cycling’s new ‘Elite Development Team’ tier. \nThis is the inaugural edition of the East Cleveland Classic; the course is a variant of the popular circuit that was used for the 2023 National Championship Road Races in June which has been modified and extended to pass through Guisborough. \nRacing will get underway at 9am for the women and 1pm for the men\, both races will start and finish near the bandstand in Saltburn. \nRoutes and Timings\nThis exhilarating event is free to spectate with the women’s race starting at 9am and the men’s race starting at 1pm. \nThe races will start at 9am and finish around 6pm from Glenside\, Saltburn. \nThe circuit will take in Skelton\, Guisborough\, Margrove Park\, Boosbeck\, Lingdale and Brotton before the riders return to Saltburn\, the women will race over 4 laps of the circuit covering a distance of 68 miles with the men completing 6 laps of the circuit and a total race distance of 100 miles. \nWhere to Watch\nThere is ample space to get in on the race action! The route is vast taking in many areas of East Cleveland and as it’s a multi-lap race means you get to see the cyclists’ numerous times. \nKey areas are Saltburn for the start and finish line and St Nicholas Church in Guisborough for the intermediate sprint. \nGetting Here\nTo help us stay green and to reduce our carbon footprint we encourage visitors to use alternative\, eco-friendly modes of transport when travelling to the race and the surrounding areas. There are likely to be short delays for all road users\, so please do plan your journey carefully to avoid disruption. We highly recommended using public transport where possible. \nPublic Transport\nTravel sustainable and use public transport. For information on travel\, public transport and parking please visit https://redcarcleveland.co.uk/enjoy/travel-information/ and https://connectteesvalley.com/ \nRoad closures\nTo accommodate the start\, Glenside will be closed to all traffic from 0600 – 1900\, from its junction with Windsor Road to the junction with Albion Terrace. Car parking will also be suspended from 00:01 on Sunday 14th April. Residents and visitors are asked to use other car parking facilities signed around the area. \nThe races will start at 0900 and finish around 1800 from Glenside\, Saltburn and will head towards Skelton\, from here the cyclists will join the A173 dropping down Skelton Ellers before climbing up into Guisborough\, crossing the A171 and circumnavigating the town via Church Lane\, Redcar Road\, Bow Street before exiting along the Whitby Road and joining the A171. \nHeading along the A171 the race will travel towards Birk Brow before turning left and heading to Boosbeck\, climbing up into Lingdale before heading across Kilton Thorpe Lane across to Brotton before heading around to Saltburn which includes the cyclists navigating the steep slopes of the climb. \nThe race will involve riders cycling along in a peloton – essentially a bubble of police and moto-marshal motorcycles at the front and back. For the safety of competitors\, a rolling road closure will be implemented and managed by Community Traffic Management and moto-marshals\, under the control of the police. \nThe rolling closure will mean traffic will be stopped for around 25 minutes to allow the ‘bubble’ to pass through safely. Inevitably\, this will cause minor disruption; however\, both the traffic management company and the police will aim to get traffic moving as soon as possible and when it is safe to do so. \nClearways\nDuring certain points of the race\, cyclists will expect to hit speeds of around 50mph. For this reason\, the race route on the day needs to be kept clear of parked vehicles. It is therefore requested that residents/visitors park their vehicles off the race route. \nThe roads used for the race route will be covered by a ‘Clearway Order’ issued by the Highways Department from the local authority. This will apply to all areas where the route passes. These roads are to be kept clear of parked vehicles during the hours of 0500-2000 on the race day. \nRoads affected by the Clearway Order in Saltburn\nGlenside \nAlbion Terrace \nVictoria Terrace \nMarske Mill Lane \nAny vehicles left on the race route will be towed away to Marine Parade\, Saltburn. \nRoads affected by the Clearway Order in Guisborough\nRedcar Road Guisborough \nParking will be available free of charge in Walkers Row Car Park which is located in very close proximity to Redcar Road. \nAny vehicles left on the race route will be towed away to Belmont House Car Park. \nTop Tips for Spectators\nTake note of the stage route\, road closures and race timings that may affect you. \nGrab a safe spectator spot early and enjoy the build up to the peloton arriving. \nIf you can’t get to a start or finish location\, check out the points of interest on the route. \nDo not obstruct the riders in any way. Keep children and animals back from the roadside. \nKeep up to date with the latest news and action via this website and https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/ \nWe want you and the riders to have an unforgettable experience\, so soak up the atmosphere and make some noise! \nAdditional Visitor Information\nYou will find a plethora of information on this website relating to accommodation\, eating out\, public amenities\, things to see and so much more so make sure you explore further.

SUMMARY:National Cycling Championships - Saltburn
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for exhilarating racing as the British Cycling National Road Championships\, Road Race returns to Saltburn. \nThe road races\, starting and finishing in Saltburn on Sunday 23rd June 2024\, will conclude the championships and challenge the riders with its steep gradient and tight hairpin bends separating the best from the rest. \nBoth the men and women will follow a loop\, with the women completing several laps to cover 130km\, and the men taking on laps to cover 182km. Each lap will start by heading into the villages of East Cleveland\, passing the historic Skelton Castle\, before heading through the old mining sites in Kilton. Riders will then drop back down to the coast of Saltburn before firing up Saltburn Bank to the finish. \nGreat Britain Cycling Team rider Charlie Tanfield\, who also rides for Saint Piran\, said: \n“I’m so excited to be back racing on home roads in Tees Valley this year. Saltburn Bank is steep and it’s over pretty quickly\, but it made for an epic finish at last year’s race\, so it’ll be really great to ride it again this year.  \n“There’s a bit of a cycling culture around here\, and there’s great roads so it naturally attracts cyclists from across the country\, and the crowds last year were amazing. I truly believe in my slightly biased opinion that there aren’t any other regions in the UK that has as good roads and climbs to ride on!”  \nSpectator Information \nTees Valley Community Foundation are proud to be supporting local community groups across Redcar and Cleveland by staging community sporting and creative activity\, from community balance bike sessions to arts workshops. A range of fun filled activity alongside the races will be available for all. Further information on the events programme can be found here. \nRoutes and Timings\nThis exhilarating event is free to spectate with the women’s race starting at 8.45am and the men’s race starting at 1.30pm. The start and finish line is just by Saltburn Bank. \nWhere to Watch\nCrowds will again pack the route after huge turnout in 2023 where riders were cheered on by thousands of supporters\, there is ample space to get in on the race action! The route is vast taking in many areas of Redcar and Cleveland and as its a multi-lap race means you get to see the cyclists numerous times. \nGetting to Saltburn\nTo help us stay green and to reduce our carbon footprint we encourage visitors to use alternative\, eco-friendly modes of transport when travelling to Saltburn and the surrounding areas. There are likely to be short delays for all road users\, so please do plan your journey carefully to avoid disruption. We highly recommended using public transport where possible. \nPublic Transport – Travel sustainable and use public transport. \nTrain – Saltburn train station is a minutes’ walk away from all the action. Regular direct trains services into Saltburn run to/from Redcar\, Middlesbrough\, Thornaby\, Yarm\, Eaglescliffe and Darlington. From further afield there is a direct service from and to Manchester which calls at Northallerton\, Thirsk\, York\, Leeds\, Dewsbury and Huddersfield.  For further information please visit the National Rail website.\nBus – Connect Tees Valley allows for quick and easy bus travel planning into Saltburn. Please not there a likely to be short delays for all road users\, so please plan your journey to avoid disruption. \nRoad – Car parking will be limited in Saltburn and we encourage visitors to plan their journeys and arrive early where possible. Again\, we strongly recommended using public transport where possible. \nPark and Ride – A FREE return park and ride service is available to Saltburn from Kirkleatham Walled Garden car park. Seats must be booked in advance here. \nPublic Toilets – The public toilets in Station Square\, Lower Promenade and Cat Nab car park will be open as usual throughout the day. \nFor your safety and to assist your enjoyment please:\n• Remember the races progresses at a fast pace\, please don’t stand in the road even to get a photograph;\n• Don’t cross the road once the lead car has passed; the race will be coming at speed;\n• Arrive early\, the race can go quicker or slower than planned. If you can’t get to a start or finish location\, check out other key climbs or points of interest on route.\n• Plan your journey in advance some bus services may be suspended or delayed so check with travel operators;\n• Don’t park on the roadside on the racecourse\, find a safe off-road position;\n• Listen to the Marshalls\, their advice is your safety;\n• Support local businesses\n• And lastly watch the race\, wave those flags! Smile: you may be on TV and lets show the UK what Redcar and Cleveland has to offer! \n
