Our Music, Our Way

Our Music, Our Way, is a brand-new orchestral music programme that harnesses the power of collective music-making whilst putting the communities of Redcar and Cleveland at the heart of the music.

Co-produced by Redcar and Cleveland Council and Orchestras Live, the programme will see Royal Northern Sinfonia working with communities in towns and villages across Redcar and Cleveland on an exciting range of creative projects and performances.

The programme was developed in response to a community consultation in 2021 which demonstrated a desire for orchestral activity. Three main areas arose from this consultation, to;

By working with our communities to explore their place and heritage through music, Our Music, Our Way will provide inspiring music-making opportunities for all ages.

In 2022, we delivered a pilot programme which saw three different projects engage with 330 people of all ages. Both younger people and older people in care settings worked alongside Manchester Camerata to create lyrics and music together inspired by what they love about where they live and the royal jubilee. Five new pieces were created and performed live with participants, Tees Valley Youth Orchestra, members of Guisborough Choral Society and professionals at concerts. Alongside this, the Hallé delivered schools workshops for young children.

“The children loved the whole experience, the staff and the ownership they were given of the composing process made it very special to them. This is one of the best projects I have been involved in as a teacher and Music Lead for over 20 years.”  - Redcar And Cleveland Primary School Teacher

"It was good to have a concert in our neighbourhood and to see local young people performing alongside professionals. We hope that there is more to come "  -  Audience Member

“The residents absolutely loved being part of this project.  We’re making a huge fuss over the Jubilee and pulling out all the stops to celebrate so to be asked to help with this amazing piece of music was fantastic.” Care Home Manager
