Safer Seas & Rivers Service App

Surfers Against Sewage offer an award-winning, free to use app that is the only national real-time water quality service that aims to protect water users from pollution. The pioneering service alerts water users when sewer overflows discharge untreated wastewater and sewage into our rivers and coastlines and when water quality is temporarily reduced due to heavy rainfall and pollution incidents.

Who are Surfers Against Sewage?

Surfers Against Sewage are an environmental conservation charity that campaign, educate and promote public awareness about water quality in our streams, rivers and coastlines and the rising concerns around plastic pollution.   Whilst the Charity is based in St Agnes in Cornwall there are Regional Representatives Nationwide.   We have active Volunteer Regional Representatives and members here in Redcar and Cleveland that are focused on water quality testing and calling for improvements to the excessive use of the Sewer Storm Overflows that affect the Coastline of Teesbay, County Durham and North Yorkshire.  We also have Reps driving initiatives relating to ‘Plastic Free Community’ groups in Saltburn and Guisborough.

When Sewer Storm overflows begin to spill, an automated message is passed to the SSRS system.   The SSRS app will then post a 48-hour Alert for the Bathing Water location that the Environment Agency deems to be affected by these Sewer overflows. The 48 hour period stands from the end of the spill period. In predictable conditions, this may have been preceded by a Pollution Risk Forecast (PRF) Alert issued by the Environment Agency. The SSRS app will also post these, but they are frequently superseded by a ‘Sewage Alert’ when a spill starts.

Pollution Risk Forecasts are only provided between May and September.   Other than using the SSRS, the only other way to access them is via a sub tab on the Environment Agency Website.

Notifications

Users can save favorite locations in the service. When a sewage discharge alert is issued by a water company or a pollution risk forecast is issued by the regulator, a notification is sent to all users via the app who have that location saved on their ‘watch list.

Other Features

The SSRS App also gives useful visitor information about each location including Tide Times, and other conditions.

SAS Data HQ. The Raw data received from Northumbrian Water sensors is collated by the Data HQ.  This data differs slightly from the ‘Alert’ data in the SSRS App as it collects every spill from every storm overflow.  If interested it can though allow a user to track back and see exactly which Storm overflows are causing the ‘Bathing Water’ location alerts.
