Carriage Replacement

In January 2026 the Saltburn Cliff Tramway closed for a major upgrade including the replacement of its carriages.

After months of specialist craftsmanship and engineering, the carriages returned to their tracks in July .

The new carriages have been individually handcrafted by specialist Teesside Craftsmen around a steel frame to ensure every detail respects the tramway’s heritage and retains its distinctive appearance. This careful approach means visitors can continue to enjoy the character of the historic tramway while travelling in newly built carriages.

Inside, passengers will find beautiful oak interiors, arched ceilings and larger windows that frame the spectacular views across the coastline. Adding to the sense of continuity, two of the original stained-glass windows, created by local artist Chloe Buck in 1991, have been painstakingly restored and incorporated into the new carriages. The remaining panels will be installed later this year.

Significant engineering improvements include a new hydraulic braking system, upgraded buffers, improved door mechanisms and enhanced hydraulic equipment have also been installed.

Both steel undercarriages have been fully stripped, serviced and restored to their original condition. Engineers have increased the water-holding capacity of each carriage by 10%, improving operating efficiency without changing the tramway’s traditional water-balanced system.

Behind the scenes, the original top-station water-fill valve has been removed, repaired and restored. The traditional ship’s wheel used to operate the tramway has also been fully restored, including repairs to its spindles and rivets.

At the lower station, structural flooring repairs and improvements to the entrance area have been made creating a more welcoming arrival point.
