The pioneering service alerts water users when sewer overflows discharge untreated wastewater and sewage into our rivers and coastlines and when water quality is temporarily reduced due to heavy rainfall and pollution incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who are Surfers Against Sewage?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 39%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Surfers Against Sewage are an environmental conservation charity that campaign, educate and promote public awareness about water quality in our streams, rivers and coastlines and the rising concerns around plastic pollution.&nbsp;&nbsp; Whilst the Charity is based in St Agnes in Cornwall there are Regional Representatives Nationwide.&nbsp; &nbsp;We have active Volunteer Regional Representatives and members here in Redcar and Cleveland that are focused on water quality testing and calling for improvements to the excessive use of the Sewer Storm Overflows that affect the Coastline of Teesbay, County Durham and North Yorkshire.&nbsp; The SSRS app will then post a 48-hour Alert for the Bathing Water location that the Environment Agency deems to be affected by these Sewer overflows. The 48 hour period stands from the end of the spill period. In predictable conditions, this may have been preceded by a Pollution Risk Forecast (PRF) Alert issued by the Environment Agency.
