Redcar and Cleveland aims to provide all children with a quality education which will lead to a brighter and more prosperous future. Schools across the borough have links with local employers to ensure that curriculums can support the skills needed for future workforces.

Early years – All childminders and ‘PVI’ nurseries are rated good or better by Ofsted and work in partnership with Redcar & Cleveland Council to maintain this high standard.

Most primary schools are rated good or better by Ofsted and continue to rate highly in government league tables. Redcar and Cleveland also has two highly rated special education schools.

All primary schools in Redcar and Cleveland have attached nurseries offering the universal nursery education allocation of 15 hours free childcare for 3 to 4-year olds. In addition, many offer the extended 30 hours entitlement and 2-year-old provision.

Secondary education – All schools across Redcar and Cleveland offer a broad and balanced curriculum to all students. Many consider additional activities to expand beyond academic success as an essential to form an inclusive education. Secondary schools across the borough are committed to improving standards in attainment and many schools boast a trend of improved academic outcomes which are broadly in line with national averages.

While all secondary schools in the borough are part of wider multi academy trusts, they continue to work closely with Redcar & Cleveland Council to ensure improved standards of education for all students.

Guisborough’s Prior Pursglove College continues to perform incredibly well. Their results place the college as one of the top performing sixth form colleges in the country. In 2022, students achieved an A Level pass rate of 99% with a 100% pass rate in 85% of subjects – a testament to the committed staff and hard-working students; Prior Pursglove College can rightly be proud of its achievements and high academic standards.

Prior Pursglove College has 40 subjects to choose from and have created an inclusive and supportive learning environment which not only enriches students’ knowledge and skills, but also builds
up their personality and confidence so that they can reach their full potential.

Redcar & Cleveland College , which is part of the Etc. group, provides apprenticeships, T Levels, vocational training, access to higher education and bespoke courses for employers; Redcar & Cleveland College will continue to be a first-class further education provider for years to come.

Studying at Redcar and Cleveland College is a great lifestyle choice for young people. With fantastic facilities and a team of expert tutors and support staff, all committed to providing a high-quality learning experience.

Nunthorpe Academy Sixth Form, part of Nunthorpe Multi Academy Trust (NMAT), is a high performing Academy that prides itself on the support and guidance given to every one of their students. Offering over 20 A-Level courses, the sixth form aims to ensure that all of their students leave at the end of Year 13 with the qualifications, skills and characteristics ready for University and their careers.

Many students who go to Nunthorpe Academy progress to Nunthorpe Academy Sixth Form and continue to take advantage of excellent teaching and learning. However, the sixth form also welcomes young people from wider schools and is ideally placed to provide student-centred programmes and wrap around care.

The award-winning Teesside University is within easy travelling distance, just a couple of miles away in neighbouring Middlesbrough. Offering undergraduate, postgraduate and short courses, Teesside University also has strong links with the Digital City initiative to create high-tech local businesses.
