Our local colleges - what students say!

In Redcar and Cleveland, we have some exceptional colleges, providing an excellent foundation for our young people to progress their careers and fulfil their ambitions. This is what some of our students who left in June 2022 have to say:

Emma Palmer, ex Laurence Jackson School, studies Biology, Chemistry and Maths at Prior Pursglove College. "It was clear to me immediately that Prior was the best place to study A-Levels based on the level of support students get and how passionate each teacher is about their subject, especially as I’m interested in medicine, I knew that I would need extra guidance and that has been readily available for me. At enrolment, the teachers talked to me in depth about my aspirations to study medicine and I knew that I would have to put a lot of work in to achieve my full potential, but there are plenty of staff to support and help with the whole process. Transitioning from school was a big change, especially considering the workload but it’s definitely manageable, there’s a lot more trust given to students which allows me to manage my work at my own pace.

I am involved in the College Musical ‘Chicago’ as well as the choir, I find they really help break up my day giving me a chance to do something completely different which is really nice. The atmosphere at college
is amazing, not only is the student body extremely dedicated to their chosen subject, but everyone is also respectful to each other, making times like lunchtimes really fun (especially events like Open Mic which really build morale)."

Ali Mousavi, progressed from Nunthorpe Academy and is studying A-Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Spanish at Nunthorpe Academy Sixth Form. "Taking your next step into higher education can be tough, whether it’s sixth form or college; choosing is never easy. Thankfully my choice was crystal clear: Nunthorpe Academy Sixth Form. I knew that wherever I
wanted to go it had to tick off my mental checklist: great teaching staff, a comfortable environment filled with lots of support and plenty of opportunities for me to thrive and prosper, without doubt Nunthorpe
has all this and more, with excellent exam results, there was no doubt in my mind that it was the place for me. Nunthorpe was one of the only places to offer me the course of A-Level Spanish and the opportunity to pick 4 A-Levels to widen my options.

I’m hoping to pursue a career in medicine, which has its stressful obstacles, and I have already developed a close bond with fellow aspiring medics in our support group created by our dedicated sixth form mentor and I can confidently say I’m in great hands.

In addition, as someone who is ambitious and keen to go to a prestigious university, Nunthorpe offers many helpful opportunities such as regular Oxbridge meetings with university ambassadors and extended qualifications that can support university offers such as the Extended Project and Sports Leadership Qualification.

My experience so far, has been nothing short of amazing: I have learnt challenging yet thrilling concepts, built a great relationship with my form and tutor and most of all made so many great new friends. "

Louis Phoenix-Hyndman, ex Outwood Academy Bydales student, studying Policing at Redcar and Cleveland College. I joined the college in September 2022, and I am absolutely loving it. We have done so much already. As well as the practical elements, I enjoy the classroom based side of the course also.

There is a lot of studying that goes alongside the practical training, but it’s a subject I’m really interested in and so don’t mind putting the hours in. Policing is a career I want to go into, and so I will push myself towards anything that helps get me there.

Its great that Redcar and Cleveland College, have a dedicated policing course that will give me the skills and knowledge for my future career. I initially chose an apprenticeship in engineering, but this wasn’t right for me and when I spoke to the tutors of the policing course at an open event, they really made me enthusiastic about studying the course. It was a little daunting that I had initially made the wrong choice, but after speaking to Redcar and Cleveland College staff, I could see that it wasn’t the end of the world, and I could still get on a course that I would enjoy.

With the college right on my doorstep, I can make the most of the gym facilities, and the library, and I am also volunteering too, lending a hand at a local children’s sports day, and acting as a course representative at open events.

I have found Redcar and Cleveland College a calm, positive environment where they treat you like an adult and it’s a really good place to be.
