Ambassador Spotlights: Unity

Can you tell me what your organisation does?

Unity is a group of expert IT and Communication businesses which employs around 40 staff based at Cargo Fleet, within Redcar and Cleveland with a goal of bringing together how we work, learn and live. We’re passionate about using innovative technology to make our clients’ businesses more efficient, effective and profitable by empowering them with interconnectivity.

With a team of talented and experienced professionals behind us, our capabilities extend beyond our services as our people bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to each and every project. We stay ahead of industry developments so you don’t have to, meaning you can prioritise your own growth ambitions.

Our story began back in 1997, after our founder and Managing Director, Simon Scotchbrook, set out to overcome the many challenges that the quickly evolving digital landscape was bringing to businesses in the local area. From cybersecurity, cloud computing, software development and telecommunications, the business grew exponentially and it all came to a head in 2020, when we regrouped under the brand ‘Unity’. Here, we were able to bridge the many silos of our business units so we could better serve our customers across multiple portfolios. Ever since, we’ve been on our journey to equip businesses connected to their stakeholders with industry-leading technology under one roof.

Can you tell me the best thing about your organisation?

The best thing about Unity is our expertise and diverse portfolio. Unity operates as a single company made up of different specialist business units that covers everything from fitting in your broadband, managing your day-to-day network infrastructure and IT or providing computer systems to streamline your business processes.

We also own and operate our own data centre based in Longbeck Industrial Estate in Marske.

What is the proudest achievement in your career?

The proudest moment of my career was being appointed as a Director in 2019, I couldn’t have imagined that this would happen when I joined the business back in 2013 as an Apprentice Software Developer. Some people start out with that burning ambition to get to the top, but for me all I ever wanted to do was make the business successful and repay the faith that was put in me. Being named as a director was just a natural bi-product of the hard work I’d been putting in to help the business grow.

What are you looking forward to in the next 12 months?

Growth, the business is set for a fantastic year ahead we’ve got the structure right within the business now and we’re looking to unify as many businesses as possible this year.

What would you say is the best thing about Redcar and Cleveland?

Whenever I’m speaking to people from outside of the area I tell people about how it has everything within 10 minutes I can be on the beach, on the high street or walking on our beautiful countryside. I say it all the time but some of us take it for granted, we really are lucky to be from here and can’t see myself living anywhere else.
