We interviewed Ellie Whitehead from Oakapple Haberdashery, learn about her organisation, and their experience in the Palace Hub below!
Can you tell me about your organisation?
I, Ellie Whitehead, am a sole trader and my business is called Oakapple Haberdashery, selling fabric and sewing supplies online to those who sew as a hobby, and I’m also looking at holding workshops for people to come into my studio. I also teach people how to sew, training them in crafting and quilting, and I frequently attend events and hobby shows, I recently went to an event in Somerset to sell my products, and I go to others all across the UK!
What brought you to the Palace Hub?
I live in Whitby, and during COVID, my online business got bigger, and at the time I was working from a shed in my garden! When looking to expand, I wasn’t able to find any studio space in Whitby, so my friend from Marske recommended the Palace Hub. I decided to phone them and they told me I would be perfectly suited for a pod room in the building, and they are fantastic! After a year of growing my business, I decided to expand and so I moved into a bigger room in the building where I am today, I even got a phone call from the studio space I applied for in Whitby originally, offering a free space that came up, and I immediately said no because I really do love it here!
What do you enjoy most about working here at the Palace Hub?
I really like the people here, everyone I’ve spoken to here is very nice and welcoming, and I’ve made some friends in the building too, which is always a bonus, it’s a great community feel inside too, everyone is always willing to help you. It’s also brilliant to be based right on the seafront, the view is fantastic and the building itself is very aesthetic.
What do you love most about Redcar and Cleveland?
Living in Whitby, I never really knew anything about Redcar and Cleveland until I came here, but just like the Palace Hub, it’s got a real community feel to it, everyone is so friendly, and really like the shops and cafés here too. In fact, when I moved here for work, I wrote a blog post called, ‘Why Redcar is my new favourite place‘, I love the beach here, the promenade is great, and I really like the new cinema too!
