From 10th – 19th September 2021, historic buildings and grounds across England open their doors to celebrate their heritage and culture, giving you the chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are free to explore.
Redcar and Cleveland are proud to be taking part in England’s biggest festival of history and culture, showcasing its wealth of history and heritage shared through its grounds, museums, and attractions.
Ormesby Hall

Loftus Westfield Community Woodland Walk

Visit the historic Loftus Town Hall and see (and join in with!) their special exhibition "Loftus - cooking up a Storm!" Something for all the family, including local food through the ages.
A Neolithic saltern and other Neolithic sites Archaeology Walk
11th September: 1pm
This is a rare opportunity to see archaeological investigation in progress! Best known for the Saxon Princess Bed Burial*, but revealed this year to have evidence of the oldest remaining neolithic salt processing in UK.
*The Saxon Princess findings are currently displayed in the Saxon Princess exhibition at Kirkleatham Museum.
Gisborough Priory Woodland Historical Garden Tour
12th & 19th September: 2pm
A guided tour to discover how, post-dissolution, the Priory land was developed into gardens by the Chaloner family and how the woodland garden now represents those changes.
Loftus Town Hall
13th – 19th September (by appointment only)
Discover Loftus Town Hall and see their special exhibition ‘Loftus – cooking up a storm’.

Also not to be missed are our magnificent museums and attractions, why not visit the world’s oldest surviving lifeboat at Zetland Lifeboat Museum in Redcar, or take a stroll around the ruins of Gisborough Priory, the dramatic skeleton of the 14th century church, an outstanding example of early Gothic architecture.
If local history is your thing, don’t forget to visit Kirkleatham Museum, where you will find the Saxon Princess exhibition, that showcases findings from an archaeological dig in Loftus where the princess, Saxon Jewellery and weapons were discovered or visit Steel Stories, an exhibition that showcases real-life stories, artefacts, and photos from local steel workers whose past labour shapes Redcar and Cleveland's industrial culture today.
