Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal will visit Redcar and Saltburn on Friday 19 July.
In the morning, Princess Anne will visit The Zetland Museum on Redcar’s Esplanade to celebrate the return of The Zetland, the world’s oldest lifeboat, following refurbishment earlier this year.
In the afternoon, she will visit Saltburn Valley Gardens, part of the Cleveland Way National Trail which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
The Zetland lifeboat saved more than 500 lives during her 62 years of active service. She was even brought out of retirement in 1880 to save a further seven lives when both of Redcar’s then-current lifeboats had been damaged in a severe storm. It was returned earlier this year after being removed for refurbishment which was only the second time the boat has left her home on Redcar’s Esplanade since 1907.
The 109-mile Cleveland Way officially launched in May 1969, following almost two decades of planning. Since then the National Trail, which is managed through the Cleveland Way Partnership by the North York Moors National Park Authority and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, has become one of the UK’s rural treasures.
