Volunteers are being sought to help Redcar, Skinningrove and Saltburn’s beaches receive some tender loving care at this weekend’s Great British Clean Up.
Organised nationally by the Marine Conservation Society, the Great British Clean Up (20 – 23 September) sees volunteers pick up litter from beaches around the UK.
Not only do their efforts clean up their local beaches but the collected waste is recorded and feeds into an international report on sea and coastal pollution.
There are three local Great British Clean Ups looking for volunteers:
• Saturday 21 September – Saltburn 12 – 2pm
The meeting point for this litter pick, organised by Saltburn Beachwatch, is the Pier Car Park.
• Sunday 22 September – Redcar – Coatham Sands 11am – 12
Volunteers should meet at the Majuba Road car park for this Friends of Redcar organised litter pick.
• Monday 23 September – Skinningrove – 1.30pm – 2.30pm
Organised by North York Moors National Park, Loftus Accord Walking Group and Loftus Co-Op, volunteers are asked to meet at the Cattersy car park.
Gloves, bags and litter pickers will be provided.
Councillor Barry Hunt, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Environment, said: “I’ll be joining in the Great British Beach Clean Up on Sunday at Coatham Sands.
“We’re on the front line against pollution and welcome anything that helps tackle the blight of beach and sea litter.
“Volunteer groups like Friends of Redcar and Saltburn Beachwatch do an incredible job with their regular beach litter picks. We’re lucky to have such committed, community minded people in our borough.
“We’re grateful they have arranged these additional Great British Clean Up litter picks as all the litter is recorded and relayed back to the Marine Conservation Society.
“They use the information to feed into an international report on worldwide pollution levels in our seas so it’s essential that the litter-related issues affecting our coastal borough are reflected in this in ongoing research.”
Redcar recently joined Marske and Saltburn in gaining Plastic Free Communities status from Surfers Against Sewage. The Council and local businesses and community groups are aiming to reduce single-use plastics as much as possible in order to limit waste making its way into our seas.
