Independent bars and restaurants, miles of sand and industry-leading businesses.
Those are just three aspects of life in Redcar and Cleveland that get a big tick from Lucy Tyreman.
Lucy is a marketing executive at Nepic, the North East of England Process Industry Cluster.
She works alongside the Nepic team at the Wilton Centre to support chemical businesses around the region.
We caught up with Lucy, 23, who lives in Loftus, to hear more about her love affair with Redcar and Cleveland. She’s certainly a great Ambassador for our area…
What do you love about the area?
Being beside the seaside!
Waking up every day and being so close to the beach really does it for me – we are so lucky to share such a beautiful coastline.
I think the people play a massive part too. We have a great community spirit within the area that is so infectious.
We are so committed to supporting each other when times are tough, there’s always someone out there that will be willing to help you.
Tell us about what makes it home?
I was born and raised within the area, I’ve always had a passion for it and the opportunities that lie within the borough.
Since graduating from Teesside University in 2018, I wanted to stay within the borough as I wanted to be close to family and I just couldn’t move away from the beautiful coastline.
Living and working in the area benefits me in many ways such as being close to family and friends, it’s just a short and relaxed commute to work and the chance to socialise with friends. I think the area has really improved itself and is constantly trying to enhance all aspects of life.
What makes the lifestyle here appealing for young people?
The area is booming with its up and coming independent shops, bars and restaurants such as Redcar’s Northern Quarter, Guisborough and Saltburn.
It’s fantastic to see the area buzz with a different independent retailer opening each week.
Being so close to the coastline and beauty spots such as Roseberry Topping and home to the Cleveland Way Woods means it’s easier than ever to live such a wholesome lifestyle.
How do you think more young people can succeed in business in Redcar and Cleveland?
It’s easier than ever to get involved with businesses within the area. Ask for work placements, internships and opportunities to get your foot in the door! Don’t be afraid to ask for opportunities and keep trying if you get knocked back.
Apprenticeships are on the rise and are a great way to get into the world of work. We have a whole host of opportunities right on our doorstep, from the Boulby Mine to industry-leading companies at Wilton.

Finally, why did you sign up as an Ambassador? What appealed to you about it?
I’ve lived within the area my entire life and I feel like Redcar and Cleveland has suffered from a lot of criticism and is continuously having to prove itself.
We live in such a beautiful area and should be proud to shout about the places that make up Redcar and Cleveland because we really do have some fantastic places that we should be grateful for.
The area is striving to improve itself year upon year and I’m so glad to see that it’s constantly changing for the better.
Also, working collaboratively with businesses to send out a powerful message about Redcar and Cleveland to the world!
