Landscape

There’s been much-deserved recognition for our landscape, and the people working hard to look after it. Saltburn is leading the way, and seems to have people all over the country charmed!

  • The Sunday Times named Saltburn as one of the Top 40 beaches in the UK.
  • Saltburn was named one of The Guardian’s Top 10 seaside towns, with Jonathan Bennett calling it a ‘proper surf town’. From someone who has surfed on every beach in Britain, that’s high praise indeed!
  • Northumbria in Bloom awarded Saltburn ‘Best Coastal Resort’, ‘Best Railway Station’ and a gold commendation for the Valley Gardens.
  • VisitEngland gave the Saltburn Cliff Tramway an accolade and a rating of 91%. Take a trip in a piece of history and check out the beautiful views!
  • The efforts of local people have been rewarded by the ‘Keep Britain Tidy Blue Flag’ in recognition of outstanding water quality and brilliant education programmes.

The Guardian’s travel writer Kevin Rushby was filled with praise for the ‘stunning’ beach at Skinningrove and Saltburn, which he called ‘a splendid discovery’ and ‘a kind of funky Victoriana’. Our natural landscape and the lovely towns and villages charmed him right along the Cleveland Way. You’re welcome back any time, Kevin!

All of our beaches won either ‘Good’ or ‘Excellent’ in the Bathing Water Classifications. On top of that, Redcar has been awarded the Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Community Status. Congratulations to all involved!

Towns

Two amazing apprentices at Beyond Housing showed why Redcar and Cleveland is a brilliant place to live and work. Bailey, a joinery apprentice, won ‘Apprentice of the Year’ and Chloe, a plumbing apprentice, won the ‘Chairman’s Choice’ at the Direct Works Forum Awards. Another accolade went to Beyond Housing’s Coastcall team, who achieved the TSA Quality Standards Framework.

Congratulations to Redcar and Cleveland Council in partnership with TGP Landscape for the beautiful work done to Eston Town Square: they were one of four finalists in the Northern Design Awards of 2019.

Education

Newcomen Primary School in Redcar took TOP SPOT in the Real Schools Guide, 2019, a comprehensive data analysis by Reach PLC, publishers of The Gazette.

St Paulinus Catholic Primary School in Guisborough was ninth in the list, and Coatham Church of England Primary School in Redcar was tenth.
