Three Redcar and Cleveland primaries named in Real Schools Guide Teesside top 10

Three Redcar and Cleveland primaries have been named among the top 10 on Teesside in a new guide for parents.

Newcomen Primary School in Redcar took top spot in the Real Schools Guide, a comprehensive data analysis by Reach PLC, publishers of The Gazette.

St Paulinus Catholic Primary School in Guisborough was ninth in the list released earlier this week, and Coatham Church of England Primary School in Redcar was tenth.

Reach says its ranking system uses 45 different measures from public data covering up to the 2018/19 school year.

The publisher adds: “National league tables only look at overall Key Stage 2 results and progress scores, which may mean schools which help all pupils make progress but only get slightly better than average results overall may be overlooked.

“Our ranking system aims to move beyond just looking at Key Stage 2 results as a measure of how good schools are and to give parents an idea of which schools will help their child prosper, no matter what their background is.

“As a result, the league table tries to factor in other things as well, like whether all pupils are making progress (not just those expected to get top grades), what attendance is like, the ratio of teachers to pupils and whether pupils are doing better than expected.”

Earlier this year Newcomen Primary was ranked as one of the top 150 state primary schools in the country by the Sunday Times Parent Power guide.

The Sunday Times analysed performance in 2018’s SATS and looked closely at scores in three key areas: reading, GPS (grammar, punctuation and spelling) and maths.
