Celebrating our brilliant market towns, jobs news and inspiring women in Friday Five

The sun is shining, we’ve got the office window open and it definitely feels like spring is on the way.

Friday Five this week highlights some of the benefits of living in our borough, has updates on two crucial employers and looks ahead to an uplifting awards event.

Here we go…

1. It was reported last weekend that Saltburn and Guisborough had been named in a list of the top 10 most affordable market towns to live in around the UK.

So far, so good?

Yes, but as everyone around Redcar | Cleveland knows, there is so much more to both towns than the cost of living. Teesside Live made that very point with two quick listicles on what makes both places great.

Take a look and see what you would add here.

2. There was a long-awaited update on the British Steel takeover by Chinese firm Jingye on Tuesday.

The deal will see hundreds of jobs at Skinningrove and Lackenby safeguarded, with Jingye planning to invest substantial amounts in the facilities.

Further details are available via the Northern Echo.

3. On a similar theme, the takeover of Sirius Minerals by Anglo American will go ahead following a shareholders’ vote in London earlier this week.

The circumstances around the takeover were clearly difficult for many local shareholders, but let’s hope the project now progresses at speed and brings jobs and prosperity to our area.

There are more details here via BBC News.

4. Another Redcar beach music event was confirmed this week. A number of popular gatherings have been held in recent years and Cream Classics on the Beach will take place on the late May Bank Holiday weekend, a day after Beach Jam.

There are some big names on the line-up…

5. Finally, it’s the fifth Redcar and Cleveland Inspiring Women Awards later today at the Wilton Centre.

It’s always such an uplifting occasion and we’re looking forward to finding out who will get well-deserved recognition.

Have a great weekend everyone.
