Unique area of land marketed as leisure opportunity on Redcar’s seafront

A unique area of land overlooking the beach in Redcar is being marketed as a prime opportunity for development.

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council has identified the RKade site, which was formerly used as a skate park, as an opportunity for a variety of leisure-based organisations to bid their interest.

This is part of the council’s longer-term ambitions to revitalise the Coatham area into a leisure destination.

The council owns the 2.65-acre area, located on Majuba Road near TunedIn!, and is advertising the land as a long-term lease agreement of up to 99 years.

The council and leaseholders Enterprise West reached a mutual agreement to end the current lease meaning the site will be vacant from mid-April 2020.

Full demolition and clearance of the site is expected to take place this year, with preparation of the area for the upcoming development to be supported by funding from Tees Valley Combined Authority.

The area bordered in red is being marketed

The council is also set to build a temporary car park at the Coatham Bowl site, as well as a large grassed recreational area, to support the upcoming Tour de Yorkshire in April. This will also provide alternative parking to Majuba Road when the RKade site is developed.

The boundaries of the Coatham Bowl site on Majuba Road, Newcomen Terrace and Queen Street will be tidied up as part of the works.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “There is a massive amount of potential for this site, right on the beach at Redcar, to boost the town’s leisure offering and it’s part of a huge change happening across Redcar and Cleveland.

“The combined authority has already invested in the historic Walled Garden at Kirkleatham and the town’s Regent Cinema, and funding for this new development is another example of how we’re delivering to improve the day-to-day lives of people in the town, and across Redcar and Cleveland.”

Councillor Wayne Davies, Cabinet Member for Economic Development at the council, said: “We are marketing this excellent opportunity on Redcar’s seafront as it’s our long-term ambition to transform the Coatham area into a leisure destination for visitors and our residents.

“The site, with its unique and uninterrupted views across the beach, is the first phase of that ambition. The area is close to Redcar’s town centre, train station, and the South Tees Development Corporation, so it really is in prime position.”

The deadline for bids is 1pm on Friday 24th April 2020.
