Looking back on an amazing weekend of cycling

The best of British Cycling took to the streets of Redcar and Cleveland last weekend, with the 1km circuit race taking place in Redcar on Friday 23 June, followed closely by the longer and more technical road race starting and finishing in Saltburn on Sunday 25 June.

Friday 23 June – Circuit Race:

British Cycling brought this year’s British National Road Championships to Redcar and Cleveland, with races being held in both Redcar and Saltburn.

The circuit race took place on a tight and technical 1km circuit around the streets of Redcar, with riders starting on the Esplanade before heading down the High Street.

Alongside the cycling event, there was also a special one-off food market, The Spoke Market, where local food and drinks traders were showing-off their wares into the evening. To really add to the festival feeling, there were also local musicians from ‘TunedIn!’ to entertain the visitors, alongside festival favourites, Groove Inc.

Congratulations to all the fantastic cyclists who took part in the event, with a special mention to Megan Barker, the new Elite Women’s Circuit Race National Champion, and to Ollie Wood, winner of the Men’s Circuit Race National Championships!

Sunday 25 June – Road Race – Saltburn

On Sunday, 25 June, the road races challenged the UK’s most elite riders with steep gradients and tight hairpin bends, with the route passing through East Cleveland villages, Skelton Castle, old mining sites in Kilton, and the coast of Saltburn before finishing at Saltburn Bank.

There was plenty of space to catch the action! The route covered various areas of Redcar and Cleveland, allowing you to see the cyclists multiple times during the race.

Of all the fantastic cyclists, it was Fred Wright who took home the gold in the men’s race, emerging victorious as the winner of the hotly contested Road Race, alongside Pfeiffer Georgi, who triumphed to win the women’s race. Congratulations to these winners, and to all the fantastic cyclists who put on such a brilliant display in Redcar and Cleveland!

What an incredible weekend of racing in Redcar and Cleveland. These fantastic events really showcased our beautiful place on a national stage!
