The Platinum Picnic In The Park

Folks and families – you’re invited to a royal fun filled day to remember – a Jubilee celebration in Zetland Park! Everything is free across the day – just drop in.

For this outdoor family extravaganza, we’ve got a day of live music, storytelling, performance, creative activities, foodie pop ups and community celebration for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee 2022.

This Platinum Jubilee celebration is a day fit for a Queen – bring your picnics, just drop in and we will bring the fun and party atmosphere.

Event info

Parking and travel information – we recommend people park in Redcar town centre parking locations and walk to site. Redcar Car Information can be found HERE.

Toilets and accessible toilets will be available on site.

Food and drink – you are welcome to bring your own picnics but there will also be food and drink stalls from the likes of Parm – o – Rama, Canny Coffees, Riverside Ices, Whitley Bay pizza Company, The Hive Bar

Zetland Park is accessible to wheelchairs, mostly flat with accessible paths leading to all areas of the park.

Storytelling

The Storyteller – Chris Bostock

The Storyteller has tales to tell from near and far for all the family. Stories of royalty and ragamuffins, princesses and paupers, crowns and curiosities, as well as whispers from the dark woods – as we celebrate the planting of the Queen’s Green Canopy.

There’ll be plenty of participation at this platinum celebration!

Community Stepping Stones & Grandma Gladys from Curious Arts

A story time fit for a queen, join Granny Gladys for a royal reading of ‘The Queen’s Knickers’ whilst surrounded by crochet crowns and knickers from Community Stepping Stones. After listening to Grandma Gladys’ storytelling, you’re invited to decorate our crowns and knickers with jewels, ribbons and lace!

Workshops

Whippet Up

Join our friends Whippet Up for a free fun-filled day of family art around Whippet Up’s Jubilee teepee. There will be painting kits, chalk and modelling clay available all day to create masterpieces to add to our pop-up gallery and you can contribute to the ‘People’s Throne’ and make yourself a queen, king, prince or princess on the day.

Two Tin Cans

Look out for TWO TIN CANS; this is not an ordinary phone box! Step inside to discover a tiny printmaking studio and make an original work of art to take home to commemorate your day.  Artist Suzie Devey, will demonstrate how to print using Jubilee themed printing blocks; print making at the ready!

Kirkleatham Walled Garden

It’s Spring and time to plant; join the heritage activity officer for Kirkleatham to create a paper pot from old newspapers, add some compost and a seed in your pot for you to take home and grow.

Urban Kaos

Vintage dance workshop with a twist! Unite and celebrate with a mash-up of dance styles from times gone by. Let’s twist, jive, swing and bop together to a soundtrack of nostalgic toe-tapping tunes!

Enjoy this vivaciously workshop, full of energy, laughter, smiles and togetherness.  Afterall, this is a jubilee party – and what is a part without dancing! No dance experience or dance partners necessary – just a willingness to have a go; family friendly fun for all generations!

Teesside Archives

Make sure to chat to Teesside Archives on the day to find out more about the work they do, protecting a wealth of local records, with a display of some gems from their collections relating to Redcar and its surroundings. You can show your creative side by joining in with their free family crafts, looking at party decorations past and present! 

Stage and performance

TunedIn!

Tuned In! 2 Music will be taking the stage at this year’s Platinum Picnic in the Park, with an eclectic mix of genres and performances from the young talents of Redcar and Cleveland. Come down and support the local talent, enjoy live music and the party vibe.

Tees Women Poets

Members of the Tees Women Poets collective will take the stage with a variety of verse and a smorgasbord of sass. The Tees Women Poets are a performance poetry collective for women who live or work in Teesside. This socially engaged sisterhood will be sharing new work.

The Funk Collective

The Funk Collective are one of the North East’s finest party and event bands, playing a classic selection of funk, disco, pop and soul hits – as well as modern dancefloor fillers in their own inimitable style.  Bring your dancing shoes!

Last Anthem

Last Anthem are the band to get this Jubilee party started!  From Oasis to the Kaiser Chiefs, Michael Jackson to Queen, they’re sure to have you on your feet and singing your heart out!

The Cath Costello Band

With a host of hits from the 60s right through to the present day, The Cath Costello Band boast some of the finest musicians in Teesside. You won’t be able to stop yourself singing along!

The Moondogs

The Moondogs are a young, vibrant three-piece cover band, recreating the sights, sounds and raw energy that defined the 50s and 60s.  From the fantastic 50s rock ‘n’ roll sounds of Elvis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and co… to the musical explosion of the 60s; from artists such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Animals, Johnny Kidd & the Pirates, The Kinks and the Spencer Davis Group etc… You’ll be transported back to those exciting times when music shaped a generation.

Los Capitanes

Los Capitanes are a three-piece, Latin-style acoustic band playing and arranging an eclectic range of covers.  All the hits, but not how you’ve heard them before!

“I’ve never heard anything as ground-breaking and downright fun as the music these three lads are performing.” ~ The band’s mums.

Folk Dance Remix – Step Hop House

A fresh, quirky, colourful and magical collision of traditional and hip hop dance and music: high-energy, with a unique remix of maypole, clogging, ceilidh, street, house and breakdance with a hint of African and Bollywood… all to a live soundtrack of fiddles and beat boxing – this is folk and street Dance like you’ve never seen it before! And there will be a chance for you to dance and join in at the fabulously fun, funky social dance, Ceilidh Jam, and Street Dance the Maypole workshops, creating wraps and ripples mixed with waves and breaks around a contemporary-designed, bespoke-ribboned maypole… all to live music with remixed twists!

Queen of the Dancing Decades

The Imaginarium Creative Studios’ presents ‘Queen of the Dancing Decades’, a magical dance journey from 1952 when the Queen was crowned to the present day, exploring the styles of each decade through dance, theatre and music to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in style. Performed by professional artist Jake Nwogu and lead youth dancers from the Imaginarium, plus over 130 performers from local schools and village halls, our Queen will be celebrated in all her regal glory, bringing the whole community together.

Curious Arts – Wildflower

What does it mean to be a Wildflower? Blooming wherever you’re planted. Being your vibrant, colourful self, sometimes under the harshest conditions.

Join the Wildflowers as they ride by for a fun, floral pop-up performance, creating a welcoming environment where everyone can thrive! #Wildflower

The Bewonderment Machine – A Bird in the Hand Theatre

The Bewonderment Machine Is an artist-built cycle-powered carousel, a kinetic public sculpture and a magical journey for small children. Enjoy this quirky dreamscape, combining found objects, puppetry, machinery and music; this is a joyful call to re-wild our imaginations, and a celebration of the creatures that are increasingly losing their familiar place in our children’s lives and in their language.

Bubz Bizzyness – Creative Arts

A gallery of local nature-themed flags and banners will be flying at the Jubilee Celebration. Local artist, Bub Bacon, has worked with participants from local community groups to design and create colourful flags for various themes, such the Queen’s canopy of trees and local gardens, showing the abundance of nature and environmental benefits to the local area.

The Queen’s Green Canopy is an initiative that began in May 2021 in the United Kingdom in honour of the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022. To increase and protect the native tree cover, people will be urged to create this ‘special gift’ for the Queen, to mark her 70 years on the throne. The Queen’s canopy flags to celebrate this work will be exhibited at the event, so be sure to look out for them – The Queen’s Green Canopy is forever growing.
