A new temporary exhibition at Skinningrove’s Land of Iron launches this Saturday 1st July celebrating the unsung heroes of the ironstone mining era.
Ever wanted to find out why miners loved rats so much? Puzzled over who made munitions for the troops during the First World War? Wondered why it’s considered unlucky to put your shoes on the table?
Answers to these questions and many more can be found at the exhibition which can be seen as part of a visit to Land of Iron. Hazards, Heroes & Superstitions gives visitors the opportunity to view rarely seen photographs and artefacts that are not normally on display to the public as part of the museum’s permanent exhibition.
The exhibit was curated by Land of Iron’s Collections Officer, Angela List-Evans, and is made up of pieces from the museum’s large archive collection.
Angela said:
‘We have put a lot of work into creating an exciting new exhibit for visitors to the museum that tells some of the lesser-known stories of the lives, dangers, and everyday heroics of the people and animals who clearly weren’t ironstone miners but lived and worked alongside them.
As well as artefacts, photos and stories, there are also ways for younger children to get involved by following our museum mascot Gladstone the Rat through the exhibit and discover things for themselves.’
Land of Iron, formerly Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum, reopened to the public in 2023 following a substantial redevelopment project. Thanks to National Lottery players, and the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, £2.3 million was invested into the museum which is now set to bring expansion, employment and tourism to Skinningrove’s Iron Valley.
Hazards, Heroes, & Superstitions opens on Saturday 1st July until Saturday 30th September. Admission is included within the museum’s standard entry fee.
