If you are looking to fill your half term with fun and excitement, come to Redcar and Cleveland. We have something for everyone! From art galleries to owl flight displays, here’s some of the top activities we’d recommend for all the family to enjoy.
Redcar Palace – Craft Workshops || Free
From the 21st to the 25th of February Redcar Palace will be hosting a range of exciting new workshops. Stop by and try out Paleo-Palace fossil finding, a seaglass card workshop, mini pride activities and clay activities. Limited spaces available, places need to be booked – be sure to click the links for the booking site and further information!
Kirkleatham Owl Centre – Crafts and Displays || £2.50 – £3.50
There’s lots on at the Kirkleatham Owl Centre as it re-opens for the half-term. For all day activities, visit on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday for children’s crafts, or on Friday for nest box making workshops. Flight displays giving you the chance to see the centre’s magnificent birds in action happen every day at 2.30pm – make sure you don’t miss out! Ormesby Hall – Flight of the Swallow trail || Free
On this beautiful outdoor trail you’ll follow the migration flight path of Susie the swallow and discover the challenges she faces on her journey from South Africa to Ormesby Hall, a green oasis in the heart of industrial Middlesbrough. Once you’re done, head inside the house to search for the bird boxes and find out more about the birds that live in the garden at Ormesby Hall. Normal admission applies to visit the house, garden and cafe (adults £6, children £3), however the trail itself is free and does not require booking. For event times, please visit here.
Kirkleatham Museum and Grounds – Montgomery Bonbon: Mystery Museum trail || Free
Close by at the Kirkleatham Museum and Grounds get ready to do some sleuthing with the Montgomery Bonbon: Mystery Museum trail, organised by Walker Books and Kids in Museums to celebrate the release of comedian Alasdair Beckett-King’s brilliantly funny new book Montgomery Bonbon: Murder at the Museum. Grab an activity sheet at the museum to test out your detective skills, solve puzzles and have fun! The trail will run from 11 February until 31 March 2023 and is free to enter. Eston Arts – ‘Fluid’ exhibition || Free
Julie White’s art exhibition ‘Fluid’ returns to Eston Arts on the 23rd – 25th of February due to popular demand after its initial debut in December. If you missed out due to the cold weather make sure you check it out while you still have the chance! Find more information on opening times and other exhibits here.
Saabat Gallery – Saturday Family Art Trolley || Free
Based in both the gallery and community garden, the Saabat gallery offers weekly Saturday art workshops encouraging you and your kids to get creative. Refreshments will be provided but bringing a lunch along to enjoy in the beautiful gardens is recommended. Sessions run from 10am – 2pm – you can email Nathaniel@saabatgallery.com to confirm your attendance or just drop by. The Saabat Gallery’s website can be found here.
Rural Arts – Art Workshops (Prices Vary) and Exhibitions || Free
There’s plenty to do with Rural Arts over the February half-term to help you flex your creativity. Discover something new with their unique art workshops or stop by and check out the work of this month’s exhibition artist Jane Claire Wilson, who creates gorgeous textile work based on the places she’s been and the people she’s met along the way. Cargo Fleet Heritage Gallery – “Living Skies” by Kate O’Neill || Free
Running until February 24th, Kate O’Neill’s ‘Living Skies’ exhibit captures the beauty of the sky in all its forms through photography. The gallery is free to enter, open 8.30am – 4.45pm, Monday – Friday. For more information, click here.
