Seaweed Pressing Workshop

Ever wanted to learn more about the uses of seaweed? How the tides work? How and where to collect seaweed? How to press beautiful specimens of seaweeds and how to identify a variety of species?
To learn all this and more, join Claire from Craft and Nature Creations for this Seaweed Pressing Workshop at the Saltburn Valley Woodlands Centre, just a 10 minute walk from the beach. August is great time of year for seaweeds, and a good variety should be available to collect and press. The event is scheduled for low tide, on a large spring tide. You will have your very own cardboard press to take home with you and hopefully some new found appreciation and knowledge of this marine macro algae. A microscope will also be available on the day to study the finer details of seaweeds.
What to expect:
10.15am Arrival and Welcome
10.30am Briefing and exploration of seaweeds. Look at a vast array of beautiful pressed samples, what to look for, learn about the tides/safety
11.30am – Head outside (buckets provided) to collect seaweed specimens. Don’t forget your wellies
12.45pm – Quick coffee break/snack/lunch back at the centre
1.15pm – Press and label seaweed specimens into a press
2.00-2.30pm – Event End/Q&A, participants can take their temporary seaweed press home with them (inc instructions)

All equipment will be provided including trays, buckets and cardboard presses to take home your pressed herbarium specimens. No previous knowledge required, just a level curiosity and/or interest to book yourself a place and turn up.
