Staithes Festival: Heritage Talks

September 13 @ 9:00 am - September 14 @ 6:30 pm

£4

Buy tickets for the Staithes Festival of Art and Heritage’s fascinating programme of heritage talks, and discover what inspired those who put the area on the map.

Learn about the world’s greatest navigator Captain Cook who first saw the sea from a shop in Staithes, see pioneering Victorian photographer Frank Meadow Sutcliffe’s raw images of daily life in Staithes, find out about the relationships between the Staithes Group of impressionist artists as they captured the harsh realities of a fishing life, hear recollections of the amusing 1950s adventures along the coast of Whitby photo-journalist John Tindale and chat with Staithes historians and fishermen whose tales and memories keep Staithes stories alive.

Discover the truth behind the famous Staithes Mermaids legend, find out why they’re looking for the key to the universe a mile underground in Boulby mine, marvel at the remains of those living and working a mile along the coast 6,000 years ago to Saxon times, and be thrilled by the exploits of intrepid Redcar lass Gertrude Bell, explorer, archaeologist, mountaineer, colleague of Winston Churchill and TE Lawrence, dubbed Queen of the Desert, who actually helped draw the map of modern Iraq.
