It’s Friday, the sun is trying its best to shine…it’s Friday Five – our round up of five great things happening in Redcar and Cleveland this week.
1. We start with a special anniversary. Can you believe it’s one year today since the final episode of The Mighty Redcar was broadcast? The whole country was treated to amazing drone footage showing off the best of our area, and inspiring stories of young people from Redcar and Cleveland got national attention as the show was broadcast on the BBC. We got in touch with director Dan Dewsbury for his recollections 12 months on.
A proud Dan told us: “The one thing I remember about making The Mighty Redcar was the warmth of the whole town. Once people understood what we were doing and trusted us I knew we could attempt to change people’s perceptions.
“The pride people have in this place is something to be treasured. It goes without saying that within the first ten minutes of arriving and seeing the spectacular beauty of the area, I knew I could make a series which showed that greatness while also being true. “It’s been said many times before, but the spirit of the people is what makes towns like Redcar a wonderful place to be part of.”
2. Staying on the topic of inspiring people, a huge well done to everyone involved in the beach cleans that took place across our gorgeous coastline last week. Organised nationally by the Marine Conservation Society, the Great British Clean Up saw dedicated volunteers give up their time for the benefit of everyone who visits and enjoys the sands of Redcar, Saltburn and Skinningrove.
3. A piece of fascinating local history is on display in Guisborough for the next month – and we were there for the launch this week. The Gisburne Bible was given to the Gisborough Priory after a fire destroyed books and other treasure in 1289. The medieval bible is now on loan from St John’s College, Cambridge, and can be seen at Guisborough Library until October 29. https://www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk/News/Pages/historic-bible-comes-home.aspx
4. There was great news for Guisborough-based Caremark this week as it was named among the top 20 recommended care providers in the North East for the third consecutive year. Manager Michelle Jackson said: “It’s always special when the people you are provide care for take the time to submit a review and that this is then used to give you a score. We’re happy to get 9.7 out of 10 but will be working even harder over the next 12 months to ensure we remain in the top 20 and that our score is even higher in 2020.”
5. Looking ahead, things will start to get a little spooky next week as the countdown to Halloween begins at the fantastic North Shire in Liverton. The enchanted café will host Halloween-themed afternoon tea every day throughout October. Call 01287 642228 to book and watch out for creepy crawlies!
