EDAN at 20

June 12 @ 8:30 am - July 11 @ 4:45 pm

Free

You’re invited to the next exhibition at The Heritage Gallery at Cargo Fleet: EDAN at 20

The exhibition will be open with free admission, 12th June – 11th July 2025, Monday – Friday, 8.30am – 4.45pm.

The official opening evening is on Thursday 12th June, 5pm – 7pm, which offers a great opportunity to meet members of the artists and ask any questions you may have about the work on display.

“It has been twenty years since a group of artists from the East Durham area realised that there were no organisations or groups in East Durham that would encourage and support their continuing artistic development, and no designated local sites for exhibiting their work. They created East Durham Artists’ Network (EDAN) to fill the gap.

In 2025 we celebrate the success of that initiative.

EDAN is now a fully constituted not-for-profit company with a membership of over fifty professional and amateur artists and supporters who work in a wide range of media. It is committed to furthering the skills and interests of its members through a process of mutual support, investigative learning, and engagement with other groups and activities that encourage practice relevant to the concerns of local audiences.

Members run a small gallery in Seaham on a voluntary basis and have a programme of exhibitions throughout the year. The gallery programme enables them to present their work professionally, following their own enthusiasms and using their preferred media. At the same time, it includes themes and subjects that are relevant to local people, whilst understanding that the area is never isolated from wider regional, national and global changes.

For EDAN members, exhibiting work is a focal point for encouraging conversation with audiences, about valuing different voices, and enhancing awareness of the range of talent in our region that is often overlooked in the wider national and international arts scene. We value our industrial history and wish to celebrate that. At the same time, we live in a time of change and dynamic global connections that impact on everyday lives. Addressing these questions is a consistent concern in our art.

The work in this exhibition is representative of the range of current member interests. Each artist has chosen a selection from their own portfolio that is representative of work they have produced as a consequence of their involvement with EDAN. This is the culmination of twenty years of consistent voluntary and developmental activity.  Our relationship with the Heritage Gallery is an important part of that.
