Redcar Kite Festival

June 13 - June 15

Free

Redcar Kite Festival returns to the skies above Majuba Beach following the success of last year’s inaugural event. The free family-friendly festival will welcome some of the largest and most spectacular kites in the world, celebrating Redcar’s natural environment as the wind whips off the sea and sends the kites spiralling skyward in a spectacular display of colour and movement.
Each day there will be kite flying displays by the Northern Kite Group in beach arenas including:
• kite displays to music
• Stunt kites
• Chinese dragon
• Kite ballet to music
• Inflatable kites
• Rainbow Deltas – chance for children to fly a kite.

Times will vary according to the wind conditions but there will be kites in the sky from 10am – 4pm both days.

There will also be free workshops in our Marquees-by-the-Sea including kite making workshops so you can fly your own kite and fun science, art and craft activities.
Children in our local schools and community groups will be making kites in the run up to the festival and a professional kite maker has also been commissioned to work with local groups to create a fantastic kite dedicated to Redcar.

Amazing walkabout performers will celebrate Redcar’s coastal location. On Saturday come and say hello to Cali and Mali – giant stilt walking octopi. They have 8 legs, three hearts and are very friendly. Their companion Captain Barnacle will be helping them navigate the Kite Festival crowds.

On Sunday All at Sea will welcome the debonair Maritime Captain Monty Montague who will be piloting his luxury cabin cruiser whilst towing his gorgeous water skiing wife Minty.

And throughout the weekend, look out too Nimbus and Cumulus The Cloud Travellers. Riding high aloft their cloud-top homes, they drift and dance gracefully along to accompanying music, interacting with those they meet along the way. Watch as they cast magical raindrops from the tips of their fingers!

There will also a full music programme and a street food market featuring local and regional stall holders who will be serving up everything from gourmet burgers to sweet treats.
