Accessibility

Accessibility

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council believes that access to arts, events and culture is for all and that accessibility should be woven in to how we produce all of our events.

We are delighted to be working with Open Country, a Yorkshire charity with 35 years experience of working alongside disabled people, helping them to access and enjoy the countryside and the great outdoors.  Open Country have just opened a new Teesside base in Boosbeck and they are working with us to ensure that accessibility at Kite Festival is the best it can be.

If you do come across anything that you feel could be more accessible, or would like to make any suggestions to improve the site from an accessibility point of view, please get in touch with us at events@redcar-cleveland.org.uk

We believe in conversation! Please feel free to email us for information in alternative formats.

Wheelchair access

Although the kites are flown on the beach by our Kite Pilots, the best viewing is from the Esplanade that runs right beside the beach.   This is entirely paved, allowing full access to wheelchair users.

Our beach activity is also accessible with the Council’s three new beach wheelchairs.

Two Hippocampes and one Debug wheelchair are available along with a hoist to facilitate people’s transfer onto them. They can be hired free of charge from the Northern Renewable Centre. 39-41 Esplanade, Redcar TS10 3AG. Call 07729 751561 to book. They can be used by both children and adults.

All of our main walkways are step-free but please note that there are temporary steps to gain access to the beach at Majuba during Kite Festival.   Wheelchair access for the beach wheelchairs is from the slipway near Redcar Beacon.

Disabled parking

The smaller Majuba Car Park near Coatham Green will be redesignated as disabled parking only during Kite Festival.

Park & Ride

Our Park and Ride scheme is operating from the showground at Kirkleatham (adjacent to the Walled Garden).   We will have buses running every 15 minutes from Kirkleatham direct to Majuba and there are two wheelchair places on each bus.  Bookings open soon – check back here for the booking link.  £2 return for adults/ £1 for children.

Accessible toilets

There is a fully accessible Changing Places toilet at Tuned In! Please note the main building is closed for refurbishment but you will find the Changing Places toilet to the left of the main building.

There are also additional temporary disabled toilets near Tuned In! in place throughout Redcar Kite Festival.

Children & Babies

There are baby changing facilities at TunedIn and the Library as well as many cafes & restaurants in Redcar. Look out for venues with Breastfeeding Welcome signs across the town. These include TunedIn, the Library and Kirkleatham Museum & Café as well as many cafes & restaurants in the town centre.
