Boulby Mine Underground Science Laboratory Tour
Extract from event advert
“Tees Valley Supply Chain programme and the UKRI Team at Boulby Mine are delighted to offer our beneficiaries the opportunity to witness first-hand the important scientific and technical work which is taking place at this unique site on Tues the 23rd of Jun.
Boulby is a special place for science; ‘a quiet place in the universe’ where studies can be carried out almost entirely free of interference from natural background radiation. Science projects underway range from astrophysics (including the search for dark matter in the universe), to ultra-low background material screening, studies of geology and geophysics, climate, the environment, life in extreme environments on Earth and beyond.
Physical places for this tour are extremely limited to 15 due to the space constraints and H&S requirements. The event is also likely to be oversubscribed, so there will be a pre-event selection process to identify the lucky recipients.
Everyone else who registers and is not selected for the tour, will still be able to virtually witness this via a live link, which will be hosted by the Land of Iron in nearby Skinningrove. This is an independent museum celebrating and preserving the heritage of the iron and steel industries.”
