Saltburn Cliff Tramway

Welcome To Saltburn Cliff Tramway

The Saltburn Cliff Tramway opened in 1884 to replace a vertical hoist and is now the oldest water balanced funicular still in operation in Great Britain, linking the Victorian town of Saltburn with the only remaining pleasure pier on the whole North East and Yorkshire coast.

July 2026

The Saltburn Cliff Tramway is closed for a major upgrade including the replacement of its carriages.

After months of specialist craftsmanship and engineering, the carriages returned to their tracks on Tuesday 21 July.

The new carriages have been individually handcrafted by specialist Teesside craftsmen to ensure every detail has been designed to capture the tramway’s heritage.

Inside, passengers will find beautiful oak interiors, arched ceilings and larger windows that frame the spectacular views across the coastline. Behind the scenes, significant engineering improvements include a new hydraulic braking system, upgraded buffers, improved door mechanisms and enhanced hydraulic equipment have also been installed.

Adding to the sense of continuity, two of the original stained-glass windows, created by local artist Chloe Buck in 1991, have been painstakingly restored and incorporated into the new carriages. The remaining panels will be installed later this year.

Further installation works continue and then important testing and staff driver training must be completed before we can confirm a reopening date. Please check back here or follow our Facebook page for the latest updates, reopening news, and exclusive behind-the-scenes content.
