Steel Stories Exhibition

Steel Stories

Kirkleatham Museum is proud to showcase a powerful celebration of our region’s steel and industrial heritage.

This interactive exhibition is the culmination of many months of community engagement and research, showcasing stories, artefacts and pictures from real people who worked and lived in the steel industry and community.

Using a variety of display techniques, different stories of steel come to life throughout the museum and grounds: walk through a locker room, listen to stories told by real people, see the historic timeline and look to the future as the stories of steel move from the past to the present.

“Teesside’s Heritage has been created by the thousands who worked in our Iron and Steel Industry for 160 years. Steel Stories enables our young people and future generations to understand why Iron and Steelmaking will always be so important to this area.” Tony Poynter, former Union Branch Secretary.

“Steel Stories provides an excellent opportunity for our community to celebrate the important legacy of the iron and steel making industry on Teesside and the contribution it has made to the local and national economy over 170 years. It gives an insight into the experiences of many former employees together with a fascinating collection of memorabilia which demonstrate the skills, commitment and pride of generations of steelworkers. I am sure that Steel Stories will also provide an inspirational springboard for our young people in developing their careers and for the future manufacturing and business development in the area.” John Baker, former HR Director at SSI.
